Aku astronaut NFTs on display at Disney’s D23 Expo

A few days ago, Disney hosted the D23 Expo to celebrate Walt Disney Company and all its stories and worlds. The sold-out event was sponsored by Visa, who brought Web3 brand ambassador Micah Johnson’s Aku character along for the ride.

As exhibitions from Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Pixar, and the rest of Disney’s film and television studios were expected to attend, Aku was the only non-Disney character to appear. The event was held from September 9 to 11 at the Anaheim Convention Center adjacent to Disneyland in California.

Aku is a character established as one of the world’s initial digital explorers on a mission to prove that no dream impossible. Johnson responded to the news through Twitter, stating that he was deeply thankful for all the support Visa has provided him as an artist.

Previously in the year, it was announced that Visa released a program to get creators into the world of NFTs and Web3, and that Johnson would be an ambassador for the program. Some of the services that Visa offers to chosen artists involve access to thought leaders, technical and product guidance, community building, and networking with Visa’s customers and partners. In addition, at the end of the program, participants will be given a grant to start their NFT projects.

When a second basement for the Atlanta Braves, Johnson retired in 2018 and devoted his life to creating artworks. Aku is his most famous character, and got inspired when the artist overheard a young boy ask him, “Can astronauts be black?”. In August of the current year, the character was on the cover of Time Magazine.

Financial institutions are leaning into Web3

Visa’s move to promote its artwork of its Web3 brand ambassador Micah Johnson at Disneys D32 Expo comes as little surprise to those who follow Web3 news. Throughout the year, financial intuition and payment service companies have invested in Web3, NFTs, and the metaverse. Below are some of the top stories.

Firstly, One month ago, South Korea’s number one bank KEB Hana Bank said that it was accessing the popular metaverse The Sandbox. The bank’s decision to move into Web 3 is part of a countrywide effort to extent metaverse business in the banking industry in Korea.

Second, Sumitomo Mitsui, the second-largest banking institution in Japan, announced that it was cooperating with Web3 company HashPort to offer NFTs and crypto-related services to customers. The bank will launch a “token business lab” to lead experiments and act as a sponsor for crypto and DeFi in Japan.

Finally, the current summer, payment processing giant Mastercard reported that it was cooperating with seven top NFT and Web3 platforms, containing Mintable, Nifty Gateway, Immutable X, and others. Customers can now use their Mastercard to buy from any of the seven Web3 platforms.

It’s possible that the appearance of Johnson’s digital explorer Aku will be somewhat of a novelty at the Disney-dominated event. But one thing is certain: we can expect more Web3 projects and exhibitions from Visa and Johnson in the future.
