Pokémon Company is looking for expert in Web3, NFT

A recent job posting indicates that the company which made the hugely popular Nintendo video game series may be thinking about Web3 strategies.

Is there a blockchain for Pokémon?

The Pokémon Company hasn’t joined this market yet, but we’ve seen other developers try and fail to bring the idea of fighting monsters from the video game series to life in Web3. But a recent job posting shows that things might be about to change.

The Pokémon Company, which is a partnership between game makers Game Freak and Creatures and game publisher Nintendo, is looking for a Corporate Development Principal. In this job, you would give advice to the company’s leaders about how to run the business and research new technologies. Also, the company wants to hire someone who is well-known in the Web3 community.

The company wants to hire someone with “strong expertise and knowledge of Web3, including blockchain technology and NFT, and/or metaverse.” Still, it asks applicants to be “well connected to a network of investors and entrepreneurs in the above technological areas (Web3 and metaverse)” if they want someone who already knows a lot about the field.

When it comes to Web3, the listing doesn’t make it clear what The Pokémon Company might do, whether it’s with NFTs or a blockchain-based game. Decrypt contacted the company to ask what they thought about possible Web3 goals, but they didn’t answer right away.

In general, though, the listing seems to point to a job that will help the 24-year-old company that runs what has been called the most valuable entertainment brand in the world to keep coming up with new ideas. For example, the Corporate Development Principal will make a “innovation challenge” for the company and look into ways to work with other companies on new technology.

Niantic is exploring AR games for NFT users

The long-running property has led to a huge number of video games, media, and products, like toys, clothes, TV shows, movies, mobile games, and tie-ins. The Pokémon Company is in charge of all of them. Outside of Japan, Nintendo puts out all of the Pokémon games for consoles, even though it doesn’t own the franchise.

The Pokémon idea of collecting monsters could be a great fit for NFT-based games or even digital goods that are worth a lot of money. Several teams have attempted to create this mixture in the absence of an approved offering.

The most well-known unofficial example is Pixelmon, which sold $70 million worth of NFTs early last year before releasing art that was highly derided; even its founder acknowledged that the image release was a “terrible blunder.” After taking over the project in September, a new team of leaders put out new artwork and a new plan to try to save it.

In February 2022, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said that the idea of the metaverse, which is a more immersive and interactive form of the internet used for games, social connections, business, and more, had “huge potential.” He said that Nintendo isn’t in a hurry to make games for the metaverse.

Niantic, the company behind the popular mobile game Pokémon Go, is looking into augmented reality games that take place in the “real world.” Pixelynx, a studio co-founded by electronic musician Deadmau5, made the music metaverse game Elynixr. This is one example of how other businesses could use Niantic’s platform to create NFT-driven experiences.
